Recently, I was listening to an interview with Jillian Michaels, trainer from the “The Biggest Loser”. She made a profound statement; “the concept of weight loss is simple, burn more calories than you consume and you will lose weight. The reason I am successful is that it is not easy and people need help dealing with the mental and physical issues of weight loss”.

I know what she means first hand. As I write this, I have lost twenty five pounds. I don’t always feel like working out, but I love the way it makes me feel, the energy it gives me and the weight loss results that it provides.

The concepts I discuss in successful selling are very simple. However, based on our individual personality and past experience, some of the steps may be difficult and go against out nature. For example, my personality is outgoing and gregarious and I enjoy meeting new people. I am also very talkative and that can be a problem especially when I teach that you must talk 30% and allow your prospect to talk 70% of the time.

Why don’t I just talk all I want and show the customer what an expert I am? Why should I suppress my nature to say what I want? It is simple…because it does not get the results I want. It’s a simple concept…not always easy to apply.

Some of the most memorable successes you will have in your life will come from learning new skills, pushing yourself and overcoming. Will you be willing to change in order to get the results you want?

Can you think of any task or process where this principle would apply? I would love to hear from you.

Have a great week!

Most people will admit that life can become hectic if you allow it. It can sneak up on you. One moment you are making a new resolution to control your time and make quality deposits in the most important areas of your life. Then you find your self overwhelmed and overbooked and wondering how it happened!

This is not a rant on how to stay organized or how to prioritize. We can talk about that later.

I want to know, are you are living in the moment? When you are having a conversation with your spouse, children, customers or anyone, are you fully present?

One of the many issues that come with a busy schedule are  the distractions. If I am not careful, I will let my mind wander to something on my “to do” list. This prevents me from giving the other person my full attention.

You may think you are good at faking it, but you’re not. The other person can tell and it can damage your relationship. Frankly, it appears you don’t care.

One of the principles Dale Carnegie taught in “How to Win Friends and Influence People” is that if you want people to like you, you have to become genuinely interested in them.

When you are sitting across from your customer, a new prospect or your family give them your full attention. Turn off  the TV and have dinner as a family. Put your computer away during a family movie. They deserve “all” of you.

That is why I going to stop writing and watch the Titans game with my wife.

In basketball—as in life—true joy comes from being fully present in each and every moment, not just when things are going your way.

As I write this, Lesa and I are sitting in a hotel in Savannah, GA with our son Nathan. This is one of our favorite places to visit. We ate lunch at Paula Deen’s “Lady and Sons Restaurant”, walked on the beach at Tybee Island and walked through Historic Savannah enjoying a clear sky and 78 degrees.

We decided to slip away and enjoy a long weekend and have some down time. I find that getting a different view gives me a fresh attitude and energizes me so I can get back to business when I get home.

I am also excited about losing twenty pounds. I am exercising four or five times per week and can see a drastic improvement in my energy and attitude compared to the days when I don’t exercise.

Hey, I am not saying you have to travel to exotic places and run five miles per day to have a great attitude. I believe you can go to a nearby park and hike with your family or get out and walk a mile or so every day. You will be amazed how it will spark new ideas and a better attitude.

These are only a couple of ways you can improve your attitude. You can also read, listen to positive material, learn a new skill and participate in online and live seminars. Find out what works for you and get started today!.

I want to thank Rob Ellis, Senior VP of Atmos Energy Marketing for allowing me the honor of speaking to forty plus members of his sales and marketing team this week. I spoke on Ten Points: “From Selling to Serving”. I wish you all tremendous success!

Have a great week!
